Meniscus transplant
Meniscus transplantation is a procedure that is to replace the damaged meniscus (cartilaginous disc de la rodilla) one that has been donated, from the tissue bank, and fits properly to the patient's knee.
At the time of meniscal transplantation can be carried out other procedures such as ligament repair and promote healing with growth factors present in the patient's own platelets. It is usually performed by knee arthroscopy, anesthesia rachidian.
Arthroscopy is inserted into the knee via a small opening a chamber is connected to a video monitor. Following a review of the cartilage and ligaments, Dr. verifies that the meniscus transplant is the right thing. The doctor places the new meniscus to fit properly, removes the old meniscus and removes remaining tissues. An incision in the front of the knee, insert the new meniscus and suture to secure it in place. Once practiced surgery the incisions are closed.
Why the Procedure Is Performed
The meniscus is a fibro cartilaginous ring helping to smooth, protect and facilitate the joint rotation. When the meniscus breaks and causes discomfort, usually removed by arthroscopy. Although they have removed them meniscus, some people may still suffer from pain. In this case or in a very serious Torn Meniscus, transplantation is advised in order to ease the pain of knee arthritis and prevent possible.
When indicated meniscus transplantation
The meniscus transplant is recommended when there:
- an inability to play sports or other activities.
- one unpardonable knee pain.
- a displacement of the knee.
- instability of the knee.
The meniscus transplant is a difficult surgery and recovery is difficult
However, in people who lack the meniscus and have pain, it can be very effective. In cases where there is instability, be repaired ligaments affected. In case of alteration of the axes of the limb, must align using osteotomías, In case of large articular cartilage defects, shall be repaired by transplantation of osteochondral grafts. The most difficult scenario is when you have to do it all; and although very complex is feasible and prerequisite for meniscus transplantation work properly. Most people have less knee pain after this procedure.
Dr. Camprodon leads from the 2006 performing meniscus transplants in the Balearic Islands. Make 3 the 4 such procedures per year, with a success rate close to 100%
Recovery
You should start to move the knee immediately after surgery to help prevent any stiffness. Sometimes a brace or crutches are necessary during the first few weeks. Physiotherapy helps restore movement and strengthen the knee. Recovery depends on each patient, but in a few weeks a completely normal physical activity in half a year to develop and can return to sports, though perhaps not to the level of competition. It is very advisable to practice those sports requiring jumps and spins.
